Toru Iwatani's Escalator (April 2006)

Let’s begin my revisits to earlier posts with this short piece about my first experiences at GDC. I had an incredible time on that trip, but each time I was a part of the faculty for GDC afterwards my feelings about it were worse and worse, until eventually I disavowed the conference and stopped attending. But I still fondly remember the design talk by Pac-man creator Tōru Iwatani, and the years it took me to understand why an escalator should be the “perfect system” for games design:
